The Wonderful World of Chihuahuas! What is a chihuahua? Chihuahua has always been known as the world smallest dog! They are classified as a Toy Breed in AKC. Chihuahua can come in any colors! Their size usually ranges from the very tiniest 2 to 6 pounds. There are two varieties of coats - smooth and long. One unique trait in Chihuahuas is the apple dome skulls with the ‘molera’. The molera is a slight indentation on the top of the skull, like the soft spot on a baby’s head. |

| Chihuahua History Chihuahua’s ancestry is steeped in myth! It is believed that the Chihuahuas is a native Mexican breed because of the ancient relics of small doglike figures were found in archeological remains of the Mayans, the Toltecs and the Aztecs. Many believe the modern-day Chihuahua is a direct descendant of a dog called the Techichi. Chihuahuas were the prized possession of the rich, and treasured by royalty and they were even buried with their wealthy owners because it was believed that the sins of the interred would be transmitted to the dog, thus ensuring a safe resting place for their master. Also it was believed the dog would see his master safely along the journey through the underworld, guiding the deceased through all kinds of dangerous places in the afterlife! The blue and the red Chihuahuas were considered especially sacred. |

| Enjoying your chihuahua Chihuahuas are wonderful lap dogs! They enjoy cuddling with their owners most of the time. Being a small dog, they fit nicely in travel shoulder carriers and can go to most places with their owners. |

| Care of a chihuahua Special consideration must be taken in keeping a chihuahua in the home due to their tiny/small size. Every chi should have their own exercise pen (example on supplies page) to stay in when they are alone or unsupervised in the home to avoid getting into danger. Basic training Although chihuahuas are small dogs, and usually owners do let their chis get away with a lot of misbehavior that is not tolerated from bigger dogs. A chihuahua is capable of learning and a well-trained, well-behaved and well-adjusted chi is always a joy to live with. |
